WINTER EXHIBITION 2021
1 December 2020 - 11 January 2021
CARBETH HUTS - A PROJECT BY ALLY WALLACE
The Carbeth Huts, situated close to the gallery, are an interesting architectural and social phenomenon. They were established in 1918 and are still being added to.
There are over 140 of these hand-built, off-grid dwellings, each completely individual in appearance, nestling in a relatively compact area of countryside 12 miles north of Glasgow.
Ally Wallace began visiting Carbeth in July 2019, to paint, draw and film on site - the huts' architecture initially being his main subject although this gradually broadened to include the hutters themselves, some of whom he had met while working. This led to Ally interviewing and filming inside four of the huts.
The drawings, paintings and film together form a portrait study of Carbeth.
All will be on show at the gallery as part of our Winter Exhibition.
