Sandy Murphy RGI PAI
Sandy Murphy was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1956. He studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1976 until 1980, where he was a pupil of Robertson, Shanks and Rae.
Painting from his studio on the west coast of Scotland, Murphy is able to respond to the landscape around him. Although his paintings are easily defined, his work leans towards abstraction; the texture of the rich oil paint often becoming as important as the image represented. The main interest here is the relationship between one colour and another. He builds up the surface of the canvas by reworking the paint, sometimes scraping and layering it to achieve the finished result. Murphy's carefully composed still-life paintings and landscapes are executed with integrity and feeling.
Sometimes referred to as 'the artist's artist', is one of Scotland's most respected painters.
He was elected to the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts in 2000 and the Paisley Art Institute (PAI) in 2010.
